Refining Research and Investigation on Concept Theory

After I've had a meeting with Gregor White about my current aims for my project, he suggests that I should research and explore into the "Function of Concept Art" theory for 3D Art for games and animation. He also points out some possible objectives to help me investigate on this topic towards practicing and developing some unique character and prop models into a Showreel as a 3D Art Portfolio (my current aim so far for this project).

So I'm currently going to layout some possible research questions along with my aims and objectives for next week's Crit presentation for Crit week.

Research Questions:

"In theory of creativity, how can concept art be created in 3D?"

Aim:

To explore, understand, and practice the techniques used creating concept art in 3D from characters to props for games, and produce the final models in a turnaround showreel.

Objectives:

1. Review briefly on the functionally of concept art.

2. Investigate on how concept art can be developed in 3D.

3. Identify the technologies and the tools used to create 3D concept art.

4. Create a range of final characters and props (with texture) in an animated showreel.

Activities:

1.1 Research and explore how concept art has evolved from traditional 2D towards the 3D digital age.
1.2 Visual Research on examples on 2D and 3D art in sketchbook #1.
1.3 Visual Research on influences of characters and props based on their own story and genre in sketchbook #1.

2.1 Research on how concept art can be developed in 3D.
2.2 Research on any artists who works on concept art only in 3D.
2.3 Create an online forum/group discussion page about the topic.

3.1 Research on existing and new technologies that can create 3D art.
3.2 Research on tools used to create 3D models and textures.
3.3 Research on tutorials/techniques from books and online resources (forums, website, YouTube).
3.4 Practice the modeling and texturing methodes to find out if these techniques make 3D concepting realistic.

4.1 Develeop some rough character and prop concepts in sketchbook #2.
4.2 Create some further character and prop concepts on any 3D application, and work on any suitable textures for each model.
4.3 Create a range of character poses with their props, and produce an animated showreel with audio on CD/DVD as a finished media.

Hopefully this topic should be more ideal and useful for my research towards developing my modeling skills to become a 3D Artist and create a visually unique 3D Art portfolio.
